Passes Orioles legend with first-inning double for career hit No. 3,185
Derek Jeter's achievement is recognized on Stadium scoreboard as he takes over 13th place on baseball's hit list. |
With his first-inning double in Friday night’s 14-7 loss to the White
Sox at Yankee Stadium, Derek Jeter passed Hall of Famer Cal Ripken
Jr. on baseball’s all-time hits list. It was Jeter’s 3,185th hit, and he is now
in sole possession of 13th place.
“Congratulations to Derek on passing me on the all-time hits list,”
Ripken said in a statement released by the Yankees. “Derek has been such a
special player, for such a long time and I am happy to see him continue to play
at a high level.
“He represents the game and the Yankees wonderfully and I hope that he
continues to play and continues to give all of us baseball fans great
memories.”
Next up on the list is Nap Lajoie with 3,252. Jeter finished 1-for-4 with a run scored.
MONTH OF FUN DAYS
Is there anyone enjoying the month of June more than Robbie Cano? OK, maybe school kids, because they’ve gone all Alice Cooper and school is out. But baseball-wise, nobody is raking like Cano.

“He’s a great player, that’s the bottom line,” Joe Girardi said. “When
you look at Robbie he’s a complete player that can do a lot of different things
that help you win a game.
“He’s had a tremendous month of June. He’s hit the ball extremely well
and he’s played great defense. It’s a pleasure to have him in your lineup every
day.”
After an off 1-for-5 night Friday, Cano is hitting .333 for the month
with 20 runs, four doubles, a triple, 10 homers and 20 RBI.
NOT-SO-LUCKY STIFF
Russell Martin was out of the starting lineup for the second straight game and fifth in the last six with a stiff lower back. He was a ninth-inning defensive substitution, and after testing his back in the batting cage before the game said he expects to be behind the plate on Saturday.
ROBERTSON RESTS
David Robertson was not available Friday night as Girardi continued to play it safe with his eighth-inning man. . . . After claiming former Mets and Indians RHP Chris Schwinden off waivers from Cleveland on Friday, the Yanks assigned him to Triple-A Scranton.
