CHICAGO -- The Cubs are still talking with the Boston Red Sox about compensation in a deal to bring general manager Theo Epstein to Chicago, a person familiar with the negotiations said Friday.
Epstein has agreed to a deal with the Cubs and would leave Boston with a year remaining on his contract, the person said on condition of anonymity because the negotiations are confidential. The deal is reportedly for five years.
Whether the Cubs have to send the Red Sox cash, prospects or both was not clear, though various reports say the two sides were not in agreement Thursday.
The talks continued Friday for a second day.
TAIWAN TRIP: Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers, Robinson Cano and former TigerCurtis Granderson of the New York Yankees and Skip Schumaker of the St. Louis Cardinals headline the 19-man roster announced for Major League Baseball's Taiwan exhibition tour next month. The roster also includes Pedro Sandoval of the San Francisco Giants and a rather lackluster pitching staff of Bill Bray, Ross Detwiler, Dillon Gee, Jeremy Guthrie, Mark Melancon and Jose Veras.
PHILADELPHIA: Lefthander Cole Hamels underwent two surgeries. The Phillies said that team physician Michael Ciccottiremoved loose bodies from Hamels' left elbow and that the pitcher also had a hernia repaired. The two procedures were successful, according to the Phillies.
