Reds first baseman Joey Votto will have surgery to repair torn cartilage in his
left knee, leaving the N.L. Central leaders without their best hitter for the
next three to four weeks.
The 2010 National League MVP hurt the knee while
sliding into third base on June 29 in San Francisco but has continued playing.
Votto started for the National League in the All-Star game last Tuesday.
A medical exam Monday detected the tear. Votto will
have arthroscopic surgery Tuesday.
Votto is batting .342 with 14 homers and 49 RBIs.
He leads the National League in doubles, walks, on-base percentage and
extra-base hits.
Blue Jays: Toronto slugger Jose Bautista left
Monday night's game against the New York Yankees in the eighth inning because
of a wrist injury.
Bautista immediately grabbed his left wrist and
dropped into a crouch outside the batter's box after hitting a long foul ball
against David Robertson. Several members of Toronto's staff attended to Bautista,
who was tied for second in the majors with 27 homers.
After the game, the Blue Jays said Bautista did not
break a bone. But he has a tendon injury and will have an MRI exam Tuesday to
determine the severity of the injury.
Blue Jays left-hander Luis Perez
will have reconstructive elbow surgery Tuesday, an operation that could
sideline him for over a year. Perez will be the second Blue Jays
pitcher to have Tommy John surgery this year. Starter Kyle Drabek had the
operation last month.White Sox-Red Sox:
Chicago's Kevin Youkilis went 3 for 4 with two doubles in his first game back
at Fenway Park since Boston traded him June 24. Youkilis was serenaded with
chants of "Yooooouk" when he stepped to the plate in the first.
"It was a great ovation. It was just a cool thing from the fans," he
said.
The Red Sox won 5-1 but received a scare when
David Ortiz came up limping after rounding second on Adrian Gonzalez's homer
and limped badly all the way to the dugout. Manager Bobby Valentine said Ortiz
will have an MRI exam on his right Achilles on Tuesday.
Carl Crawford returned to Boston's lineup
after missing the entire season with left elbow and wrist injuries, going 1 for
3 with a walk.
Brewers: After Zack Greinke's three straight
starts apparently left him feeling fatigued and out of his routine, the team is
skipping his scheduled start Wednesday and will sit him down until next week.
Orioles: Baltimore will be without second
baseman Robert Andino for three to four weeks because of an injured left
shoulder.
Rockies: Right-hander Juan Nicasio is likely
out for the season after arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.
Rockies infielder Chris Nelson was hospitalized to
have tests for an irregular heartbeat.
