The Boston Red Sox put ace Josh Beckett on the 15-day disabled list because of inflammation in his right shoulder.

Manager Bobby Valentine said Saturday that the Red Sox are "going to take the conservative route."

"He's got some inflammation that we're going to calm down and take the time, whatever time it takes to do it," Valentine said. "We thought in-between starts was enough. He could have gotten an extra day or two, I guess."

Beckett also has had a thumb issue all season that Valentine said the club may think about "dealing with" while he's on the DL.

Beckett declined to comment.

Beckett, who is 4-7 with a 4.14 earned-run average in 12 starts, was scheduled to start Sunday. Left-hander Franklin Morales will start in his place.

Mets' Jason Bay is put on DL

Jason Bay is back on the disabled list because of his second concussion in two years.

The New York Mets put their oft-injured left fielder on the seven-day DL for concussions and activated infielder Justin Turner from the 15-day disabled list.

After sitting out six weeks this season because of a broken rib, Bay was injured Friday night when he crashed into the outfield wall while trying to catch Jay Bruce's inside-the-park home run for Cincinnati.

Manager Terry Collins said Bay was told to stay home and rest for a couple of days until he's examined by doctors. Collins isn't sure how long Bay will be sidelined but expects it to be more than seven days.

Bay, 33, sat out the last two months of the 2010 season because of a concussion he suffered when he slammed into the left-field fence to make a catch at Dodger Stadium.

"I'm very worried about it because Jason's first one was pretty severe and he hit the wall pretty hard yesterday," Collins said. "He's pretty sore today. Real sore. So we're just going to have to, again, bide our time and see how he comes out of it in the next few days and see how he feels."

The three-time All-Star signed a $66-million, four-year contract with the Mets in January 2010. He is batting .187 with four home runs and six runs batted in.

Rangers' Josh Hamilton is out of hospital

Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton was released from a hospital after becoming dehydrated because of an intestinal virus.

The Rangers said Hamilton was at home resting. Hamilton is expected to work out at the ballpark Sunday and accompany the team to San Diego for a series that starts Monday.
