Marlins' Nunez sorry for fake name, age; Yanks re-sign Garcia

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Two months after becoming the youngest starting pitcher to win a team's opening playoff game, Tampa Bay left-hander Matt Moore agreed Friday to an eight-year contract that could be worth up to $39.75 million.

Moore, 22, made his major league debut for the Rays in September, going 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA in three appearances. He started Game 1 of the American League Division Series against Texas and pitched seven shutout innings to beat the Rangers.

Moore, whose deal includes $14 million guaranteed and club options for 2017-19, began the year at Double-A (8-3, 2.20 ERA) before he was promoted to Triple-A Durham (4-0, 1.37).

Arizona: Right-hander Trevor Cahill and left-hander Craig Breslow were acquired from Oakland for right-hander Jarrod Parker and outfielder Collin Cowgill. ... First baseman Lyle Overbay signed a one-year contract. Overbay, 34, hit .286 with one home run and 10 RBIs in 18 games after signing with the Diamondbacks on Aug. 13. He was released by Pittsburgh earlier last season. Overbay also has played for the Brewers and Blue Jays.

Miami: Right-hander Leo Nunez apologized for using a fake name and age, saying he falsified his identify when he was young so he could play pro baseball. "I apologize to my supporters, my fans," he said. His real name is Juan Carlos Oviedo and he's 29, a year older than listed in the media guide. Officials in the Dominican Republic said he would not be prosecuted because he was cooperating with a larger investigation of fake documents. In September, he was placed on the restricted list after Dominican authorities said he was implicated in the case. Nunez had 36 saves and a 4.06 ERA this year. He pitched in K.C. for four years, then joined the Marlins in 2009.

N.Y. Yankees: Former Tigers right-hander Freddy Garcia re-signed for one year. He was 12-8 with a 3.62 ERA this year.

Philadelphia: Outfielder Laynce Nix signed a $2.5-million, two-year contract. He hit .250 with 16 home runs and 44 RBIs for the Nationals this year. ... Left-hander David Purcey signed a minor league contract. Purcey went 1-2 with a 7.23 ERA last year for the Tigers, who obtained him from the A's for infielder Scott Sizemore.

Texas: Infielder Alberto Gonzalez signed a minor league deal. Gonzalez, 28, hit .215 with one home run and 32 RBIs this year in San Diego, which acquired him from the Nats before the season.
