BOSTON — C. C. Sabathia is the Yankees’ undisputed ace, a dominant force on the mound, and one of three pitchers considered the leading candidates for the American League Cy Young Award.
If it were not for the Boston Red Sox, he would probably be the front-runner.
With 16 wins and an earned run average of 2.81, Sabathia is on the outside of a tight race with Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers and Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels, but his record against Boston is holding him and the Yankees back.
For as good as Sabathia has been this year, the thorn in his meaty left paw is the Red Sox, who have made him look pedestrian at best. The most recent example was Boston’s 10-4 victory on Saturday at Fenway Park that halted the Yankees’ winning streak at eight games and thrust the teams back into a tie for first place in the A.L.
