Baseball: Arizona Diamondbacks' Aaron Hill hits for the cycle again

Before Friday, only one major leaguer had hit for the cycle twice in a season, according to STATS LLC.
On Friday, Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill did it for the second time in 12 days.
Hill hit a single, a double, a triple and a home run to lead the Diamondbacks to a 9-3 victory over the host Milwaukee Brewers. He also accomplished the feat June 18 against Seattle.
"It's great," Hill said. "Obviously, it's great to get the win, too. It wouldn't have been as enjoyable if we came away with a loss. It was just a fun game."
Brooklyn's Babe Herman is the only other major leaguer to hit for two cycles in one season since 1900, doing so in 1931.
Hill doubled for his 1,000th hit in the first, singled in the third and hit his 11th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth. All those hits came off Milwaukee starter Randy Wolf.
Hill tripled in the sixth inning off Livan Hernandez. His headfirst slide into third easily beat the relay throw from the outfield.
"He's swinging really well," said Brewers catcher George Kottaras, who hit for the cycle last season. "I know it's tough to do it once."
Yankees: Derek Jeter hit a leadoff double in the first inning for his 3,185th hit, moving past Cal Ripken Jr. for 13th place on the career list.
  • Outfielder Dewayne Wise made his pitching debut late in a game in which New York was routed 14-7 by the Chicago White Sox.
Featuring a 79 mph fastball, he retired Paul Konerko and Alex Rios in order to close a four-run ninth inning.
"I'll be honest, I was very happy I didn't get up against Dewayne," said White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski, who homered twice. "He's a good friend of mine. And no matter what you do, you're going to hear about it."
Phillies: Cliff Lee is having a rough season, and it's hard to explain why. He fell to 0-5 after allowing six runs and 10 hits in 42/3 innings in a 6-2 loss to Miami.
"As far as the wins and losses, that's out of my control," he said. "But I could do something about not getting through the fifth inning and giving up five runs -- that's on me."
Cardinals: Carlos Beltran got his 2,000th career hit on an RBI single in the third inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
  • Right-hander Chris Carpenter resumed a throwing program after recovering from a compressed nerve in his shoulder, but the team doesn't know if he will be able to pitch this season.
Mariners: Outfielder Franklin Gutierrez was placed on the seven-day disabled list a day after suffering a mild concussion when a pickoff attempt hit him in the face.
Rangers: Right-hander Mark Lowe was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained muscle in his right side.
