(Reuters) - The Atlanta Braves acquired speedy Gold Glove outfielder Michael Bourn in a five-player swap with the Houston Astros Sunday as Major League Baseball's non-waiver trade deadline closed in a flurry of deals.

The St. Louis Cardinals also continued to load up for a pennant run, grabbing shortstop Rafael Furcal from the Los Angeles Dodgers while the Boston Red Sox bolstered their starting rotation by landing lefty Erik Bedard from the Seattle Mariners.

Bourn, who is hitting .303 and leads the majors with 39 stolen bases, heads to Atlanta in exchange for outfielder Jordan Schafer and minor-league pitchers Brett Oberholtzer, Paul Clemens and Juan Abreu.

"Michael Bourn is a perfect fit for our club, which focuses on speed and defense to match up with our strong pitching," Braves general manager Frank Wren said on the MLB website.

"This trade gives us the first true leadoff hitter we've had in a number of years." Read more:
